Ernie Irvan is a former American professional stock car racing driver who competed in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now known as the NASCAR Cup Series). He was born on January 13, 1959, in Salinas, California.

Irvan began his racing career in the late 1970s and made his NASCAR debut in 1986. Throughout his career, he competed for various teams, including Morgan-McClure Motorsports and Robert Yates Racing. Irvan is best known for his time with Robert Yates Racing, where he achieved the most success.

During his racing career, Irvan won 15 NASCAR Cup Series races, including the prestigious Daytona 500 in 1991. He also had 22 pole positions and 124 top-ten finishes in his career.

In 1994, Irvan suffered a near-fatal crash during a practice session at Michigan International Speedway. He sustained severe head injuries but remarkably recovered and returned to racing in 1995. Despite his comeback, Irvan was never able to regain his previous form and eventually retired from full-time racing in 1999.

Since his retirement, Irvan has remained active in the racing community, participating in various racing events and serving as a driver coach and mentor to young drivers. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2002.
